The Lexington Stakes is the final opportunity to earn points toward this year’s Kentucky Derby. Most years, the 20 points to the winner of this race would be enough to get into the gate on the first Saturday in May but this year has been different. Multiple horses cover spots 17-20 on the points leaderboard with 40 points a piece.
In the Lexington three horses can make their case with a victory. Tawny Port (40 pts) from the barn of Brad Cox is the 5-2 favorite, coming off a second-place effort in the Jeff Ruby Steaks. Both In Due Time and Ethereal Road enter the Lexington with 20 points apiece. In Due Time is the second choice in the Lexington at 3-1, having last raced six weeks ago in the Fountain of Youth, where he finished second. Ethereal Road races for the Coach, D. Wayne Lukas. He was second in the Rebel in February but tossed in a clunker last week in the Blue Grass over this same Keeneland track.
The sleeper in the race may be 20-1 longshot Strava for trainer Dallas Stewart. Strava is untested in stake-company and lightly raced on his career, making just three starts. His last start was a good third-place effort at Fair Grounds behind Cyberknife, the eventual winner of the Arkansas Derby.
This is a quality field of 11 for the Lexington and with three weeks still until the Derby, the winner of this race could have an impact in the Derby…….if they can get enough points to get into the starting gate.
